The Last Flight of Lancaster JB708 OF-J
Lille 10th 11th May 1944
This is the story of the last flight of the aircrew of JB708 OF-J. They were on a bombing mission to the railway works at Lille in northern France. Flight Lieutentant Smith DFC was the Deputy Controller for this operation, and as such the crew were one of the most expeienced on the Squadron.
The data comes from extensive research carried out by Richard Josefiak who worked at Lille airport for 20 years. The following is part of Richard's explanation to his research:
"What I reported on this crash is closer to reality even if there should be some small errors. In fact, Lancaster JB 708 OF-J was shot down at 5km south-east of the main target (Lille - Fives Hellemmes ). After a first pass and dropping [flares] the bomber orbited around the place of attack, ready to intervene again if necessary. Thus, he found himself flying in the vicinity of the illuminated, [German occupied airfield] flugplatz Vendeville. Antiaircraft guns opened fire surprising the whole crew on board. Shells struck the aircraft and touched the remaining [flares] on board causing an explosion, leaving no chance for the crew, [ who were] killed instantly. The bomber was alone at this time in this area because there were no witnesses of the facts, and no distress signal received by members of other bombers of 97 Sq".
